Robert Wilson from Within, in the presence of Robert Wilson

Perhaps the world’s foremost avant-garde theater artist, Robert Wilson ranges across opera, stage works, lighting design, video and even furniture design; Susan Sontag wrote of his career that “it has the signature of a major artistic creation. I can’t think of any body of work as large or as influential.” Wilson's legendary operatic collaboration with composer Philip Glass, Einstein on the Beach, upended conventions of traditional operatic form, and Wilson has also left his mark on masterworks from The Magic Flute to Pélleas et Melisande. This book celebrates the singular achievements of this “total artist,” from his earliest ro his upcoming works with an exceptional cast of contributors that includes Isabelle Huppert, Philip Glass, Pierre Bergé, Marina Abamovic, Rufus Wainwright, Jessye Norman, Yvonne Rainer, Laurie Anderson, John Rockwell, Nobel laureate in literature Gao Xingjian, and Robert Wilson himself. Lavishly illustrated, the book is also a unique reference of Robert Wilson's complete works with full production information. The reception will celebrate Robert Wilson's work in his 70th year and present Robert Wilson from Within for the first time. The Arts Arena is grateful to the Florence Gould Foundation, whose generous funding made this publication possible.
